Unbolted this from a frame cross member. Don't need to hold a spare under here anymore.
Surprisingly, I broke none of the bolts holding it on. They were so coated in rust that I had to really work to get the socket and wrench to fit. Also there is no rust at the top of this thing, wtf?
So I supported my drive shaft with a board and no more leaking atf on to the floor.
Leaf springs? I give up. I am buying/borrowing a sawzall and cutting the damn bolts off.

Bizarre rust distribution - looks a lot like the Range Rover parts I stripped Monday.

What did you do on Monday?

I meant Tuesday, actually (durr): yanked the air control system and both axles from my '95 Rangey parts car (the one I got for the engine). Currently thinking maybe to sell or strip the front axle, use the rear axle possibly for a trailer, and see if the compressor from the air control unit can be revived, because 12V compressor with some valves.

Sounds like fun.

The floorboards in that thing and large areas of the undercarriage had rust in weird places. Everything from powdery rust on small items to random spots with flakes all the way through and no other rust nearby. Possibly a malady related to grade of recycled steel, I don't know.
What I do know is that had this thing not suffered driveline failure, the holes in the inner fenders and into the passenger compartment would have started being a problem quite soon, to the point of "may be best to junk it".

Is that before or after, "I should buy a welder" ?

Would've been hard stuff for a previous owner to weld, really, with difficulty of access, paper thin-ness, general filth, shittiness of metal, and so forth. Particularly in the engine compartment: when you can put your fist through the top of the fender and the air cleaner box on that fender has come loose, rust is a problem.
In that respect (engine bay rust), it's far more advanced than the Ranchero, which is odd.

We'll go with after.
